Logan residents would defeat the Civic Center Drive plan, forcing the city to reroute the thoroughfare around the barrio. That kicked off a period of organizing against zoning and land use planning decisions to further defend the barrio from industrial encroachment. In 1953, as the expansion of the industrial pockets took root, the city announced an amendment to the zoning ordinance prohibiting the construction of new dwelling units or major additions to dwellings in industrial zones like Logan. Even after a 1969 zoning amendment permitting improvements and expansions on existing homes, few residents applied for such permits, conducting little rehabilitation on their homes and not building new homes for more than a quarter of a century.

The Resnicks are quick to point out that it’s not just plant workers who’ve benefited — the nut boom has improved the lives of farmworkers, too. Back when cotton was still king in Kern County, migrant workers who’d picked spring oranges and summer grapes in other parts of the Valley would descend on Lost Hills for a few weeks to work alongside cotton combines during the fall harvest. It wasn’t easy to bring kids along, so they usually stayed behind in Mexico or Guatemala.

To the south is Atlas Iron and Metal, a 72-year-old industrial site that is now part of the federal Superfund program to clean up sites of large-scale hazardous contamination. There, 25-foot mounds of shredded metals tower over a wall shared with the local public high school, and sharp metal scraps are known to rain down on students. A nonprofit, independent media organization dedicated to telling stories of climate solutions and a just future.

More than 3,400 onshore wells have been drilled in the field since oil was first discovered there in 1932; today, the site pumps out 46,000 barrels per day from 1,550 active wells. Wilmington is also home to more than 50,000 residents, more than 90 percent of whom are people of color. Due to the impact of the oil and gas drilling and refining, census tracts in Wilmington are exposed to more pollution than 80 to 90 percent of the state of California. Meanwhile, predominantly white Palos Verdes — some 12 miles west of Wilmington, on the other side of Interstate 110 — is exposed to less pollution than 85 percent of the state. The soil samples were collected in public spaces such as sidewalks and parks, community gardens, and residential yards with verbal consent from the occupant.
The wells are loud and emit noxious odors — sometimes the smells evoke rotten eggs, she explained, other times they’re sickly sweet. “A lot of our experiences on the front line are a physical attack on our body,” said Hernandez. The Logan that Andrade sees today is not the Logan that he or his sister, Cecelia Andrade Rodriguez, remember from childhood. At 42, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which her doctor told her was likely due to environmental causes.
Sam Romero said the proposed road extension opened residents’ eyes to just how little regard the city had for the neighborhood. Santa Ana planning commission records show that the commissioners were strategically approving and denying zone changes that placed a heavier industrial burden on eastside barrios that were near the downtown central core. In 1929, records show that the commission was pressured by the Santa Fe Railroad and Richfield Oil companies to consider zoning a portion of the Logan barrio for heavy industrial use.
They moved to New York for some time to work on their documentary, and eventually broke up. Smith moved to Los Angeles, intermittently transporting the tiny house around rural properties in Colorado and Montana. The cost and ordeal of moving it became too onerous, and he eventually sold it in 2020. But the rise of Airbnb offered a “guaranteed business model” for people who wanted to make a tiny house into a legitimately profitable investment, said Zach Milburn, a real estate developer. In 2005, when the sustainable-housing developer and writer Lloyd Alter first laid eyes on a sleek, solar- and wind-powered tiny house on wheels, designed by the architect Andy Thomson, he fell completely in love with it.
Nevertheless, the barrios were essentially abandoned in terms of urban development, she noted. Landmarks may be lost over time, and memories can fade, but for people like Andrade, whose family history is intertwined with protecting the barrio, the battle scars remain. The few, dedicated families of Logan who persisted are a story of a people who paid the cost of modernization while being segregated from the very progress that Santa Ana hoped to achieve.
After the fall harvest comes winter pruning, spring pest management, and summer watering and mowing. The nut industry’s nearly year-round employment has allowed farmworkers to put down roots. They can live with their families, send their kids to school, and start to grasp for the American Dream.

LA's original Persian ice cream shop has been serving locals and tourists for decades, and its rose-infused ice cream still tastes like springtime. Don't forget to add a dash of sour cherry syrup to tame all of the sweetness. This family-owned operation offers 27 flavors along with sundaes, shakes, banana splits, and an impossibly big ice cream sandwich.

An excellent Historic Filipinotown cafe, Bloom & Plume does all varieties of coffee drinks very well. But our favorite is the iced mocha - it’s their traditional iced latte, with house-made single origin dark chocolate, and it’s sweet enough that you know it’s there, but not so potent that it overpowers the espresso. Get it with half and half to make it extra creamy - it balances out the chocolate well. A high-end coffee shop in Santa Monica serving house-roasted beans, Funnel Mill is an excellent place to pick up a cup amidst the sea of Santa Monica coffee chains. They use a water drip siphon system for their iced coffee, which means that the inside of their shop looks like a Breaking Bad set.

We like the espresso here, too, so you wouldn’t be wrong if you wanted an iced latte, instead. Go Get Em Tiger has quickly ballooned from a tiny spot on Larchmont to a local mini-empire, with locations in Highland Park, DTLA, Weho, Hollywood, Culver City, and Los Feliz (temporarily closed). The fact that their coffee is consistently excellent, from the simple, sweet iced coffee, to the completely over-the-top iced turmeric almond macadamia nut latte.

Our favorite is the Ethiopian Harrar, a single origin bean that is fruity and chocolatey. The weather is already warm enough, there’s no sense in making yourself even hotter with a boiling cup of bean water. But you’ve never tried to make cold brew, and you honestly don’t really get how espresso is made, which means you’re in need of an iced coffee - stat. Fortunately, there are tons of coffee shops around LA that do the cold stuff just as well as the hot stuff - and in some cases, even better. Here are 18 places to get your caffeine fix with some excellent cold brew or an iced latte.

And also, you should head straight to Menotti’s in Venice (or Culver City) to have your mind changed.

The family-owned La Jerezana in Boyle Heights opened in late-2020, making tequila ice cream, cheesecake paletas, and raspados on-site. For surprising vegan eats hit up Dear Bella Creamery in Hollywood, where collaborations and seasonal rotations keep the menu fresh and lively. We suspect that at some point, Los Feliz announced there would be free rent for any coffee shop that opened on Hillhurst. But the best of the many, many cafes on this Eastside street is Maru, a parking space-sized spot serving house-roasted coffee. If there’s one single iced coffee drink in the city that we’d have every day, it would probably be the Layla Latte from VanillaBlack. The Layla is made with lavender and honey, and it’s sweet, creamy, and fragrant, without being too much of any one of those flavors.
Thankfully, LA is spoiled for choice when it comes to all that’s cold and creamy, with scoop shops parked everywhere, from the Westside to SGV, the Valley to the South Bay. A Sunset Junction stand-by since 2014, Dinosaur Coffee serves tremendous cold brew and iced lattes. It’s a very serious coffee shop that serves near-perfect versions of drinks, but doesn’t take itself seriously at all. And, as any writer/artist/actor in LA will tell you, using the McDonald’s Wi-Fi while working at Dinosaur Coffee is a true struggling artist rite of passage. You’ll probably walk by Obit & Del’s once or twice before you notice it, but it’s worth seeking out this new coffee shop in an oddly barren section of Hollywood Blvd. in Thai Town. A great spot to pick up lunch, HIlltop is also a cafe with locations in Inglewood and View Park-Windsor Hills. Their regular cold brew coffee is potent but not overpowering, and the nitro version is like drinking a coffee smoothie - we love it.

They make that almond-macadamia nut milk from scratch, by the way, which is as good as it sounds - we usually ask for it on the side, so we can drink whatever we don’t dump in our coffee. The cold brew at La Brea’s Neighborhood was pretty divisive within the Infatuation LA office (back when we used to go to an office) - some of us loved it, others said it was a touch bitter. We got ours with oat milk, but however you order, you’ll be happy, because it’s made with excellent Canyon Coffee espresso. But even though it’s a chain, this is still an excellent, reliable option for coffee when you need it, from Malibu and Abbot Kinney to Los Feliz and Pasadena. Their New Orleans-style cold brew, made with coffee, roast chicory, and cane sugar, is a particular potent and sweet favorite. Andante, the coffee shop and roastery on Beverly in Fairfax, serves some of the most potent cold brew around, which is ideal when it’s 6pm and your boss is showing no signs of signing off anytime soon.

Thankfully, LA is spoiled for choice when it comes to all that’s cold and creamy, with scoop shops parked everywhere, from the Westside to SGV, the Valley to the South Bay. Here now are 16 outstanding ice cream shops in Los Angeles from west to east. Awan makes some of the best ice cream in the city, period, and the fact that their treats are vegan-friendly is just the cherry on top. The dairy-free shop in West Hollywood serves complex flavors, including saffron pistachio Medjool date, spiced persimmon and graham, and blue corn tortilla.
We suspect that at some point, Los Feliz announced there would be free rent for any coffee shop that opened on Hillhurst. But the best of the many, many cafes on this Eastside street is Maru, a parking space-sized spot serving house-roasted coffee. Their cold brew is sweet and smooth, and if you’re looking for something a bit less hard-hitting, they’ve got our favorite iced matcha around. If there’s one single iced coffee drink in the city that we’d have every day, it would probably be the Layla Latte from VanillaBlack. The Layla is made with lavender and honey, and it’s sweet, creamy, and fragrant, without being too much of any one of those flavors.

Toppings are plentiful, and they’ve even got a few vegan options available. One of LA’s top practitioners of gelato, Bacio di Latte inside the Century City mall has the luscious creamy texture one would expect from top-quality Italian ice cream. The pistachio is a real gem, though the signature bacio di latte, or sweet cream, is a must-order as well. As a self-described “chef-y” Dairy Queen, Magpies Softserve embraces this label and turns it up to eleven. Hailing from Pennsylvania, this national chain has been making good inroads in Los Angeles, starting with a longtime Torrance window and now this prime LA spot along La Brea.

An excellent Historic Filipinotown cafe, Bloom & Plume does all varieties of coffee drinks very well. But our favorite is the iced mocha - it’s their traditional iced latte, with house-made single origin dark chocolate, and it’s sweet enough that you know it’s there, but not so potent that it overpowers the espresso. Get it with half and half to make it extra creamy - it balances out the chocolate well. A high-end coffee shop in Santa Monica serving house-roasted beans, Funnel Mill is an excellent place to pick up a cup amidst the sea of Santa Monica coffee chains. They use a water drip siphon system for their iced coffee, which means that the inside of their shop looks like a Breaking Bad set.
LA's original Persian ice cream shop has been serving locals and tourists for decades, and its rose-infused ice cream still tastes like springtime.
